Brunello di Montalcino 2021: the elegance of a vintage destined to leave its mark

Some vintages make an impression from the very first sip. The 2021 vintage, already widely acclaimed across several Italian regions, has reached an exceptional level in Montalcino, to the point where many are calling it a “sensational vintage.” A strong statement, perhaps, but one that is fully deserved. Brunello lovers sense it immediately: in 2021 there is a radiant energy, a rare purity of fruit, and an elegance that captivates even before the wine reaches the glass.

Brunello 2021s are deep yet vibrant wines, driven by crisp, precise fruit and aromas that open effortlessly, without requiring extended aeration. They combine incisive freshness with finely polished tannins and a vibrant tension that brings both harmony and lift. A compelling example is Podere Le Ripi, whose biodynamic Brunellos capture the purity and freshness of this outstanding vintage with striking clarity. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) did not hesitate to define 2021 as a “triumphal” vintage for Montalcino, placing it alongside two iconic vintages such as 2016 and 2019. The difference lies in its immediacy: 2021 is more approachable today, while still promising a beautiful evolution over the next decade.

The character of the vintage was shaped by a defining event: the frost of April 7–8, which naturally reduced yields, particularly in lower-lying vineyards and in the more clay-rich soils of northeastern Montalcino. Paradoxically, this early challenge played a positive role in the final quality. The summer that followed was warm but never extreme, dry enough to keep disease pressure low and to allow grapes to ripen under ideal conditions.

Two providential rainfalls, one at the end of July and another in late August, refreshed the vineyards and helped sustain a steady vegetative cycle. Then came September, marked by luminous days and cool nights: the perfect alternation to preserve acidity, aromatic precision, and tannic finesse. Many producers were able to harvest grapes in impeccable health, fully ripe both phenolically and aromatically, the essential foundation of every great Brunello.

The 2021 vintage will be especially loved by Sangiovese enthusiasts for its clarity, immediacy, and rare balance, a balance that allows the wines to be enjoyed today while clearly hinting at their long and graceful future. It is one of those vintages that sparks conversation, intrigues those discovering Montalcino for the first time, and rekindles enthusiasm among long-time followers of the appellation. And this is true not only for legendary names such as Soldera, but also more niche producers like Cupano and Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, whose wines have consistently left a strong impression.

Here at Chronos in Lugano, we have the privilege of regularly tasting the Brunellos of the producers we work with. We approach this work with dedication and respect, because telling the story of a territory first requires understanding it deeply. That is why we are happy to guide you in choosing the Brunello 2021 that best reflects your personal taste. A recommendation, a story, a shared tasting: this is how we understand and share wine culture.
